This was actually the first issue of Marvel's John Carter series that I read; I picked it up on a family road trip back in the Spring of 1979.The cover is by George Perez and Terry Austin, and the story inside was Chapter 9 of Chris Claremont's "Master Assassin of Mars" arc, with some very nice art by a young Mike Vosburg, inked by Ricardo Villamonte.
The issue ended on a cliffhanger, with Deja Thoris tossed into a dungeon with a horde of hungry ulsios (Barsoomian rats)... and, while it was my first issue, it turned out to be the last issue of the Marvel run!
At least... for a few months. Marvel managed to swing a renewal of their license a couple months later, and the series ran another four isues and an Annual.
I have since managed to pick up most of the run, though I'm missing a few. This particular series – especially the early issues by Marv Wolfman and Gil Kane – was a huge influence on me and my approach to comics writing.

I've only got a few of these issues. I actually have more of the Moorcock ones. But these were pretty enjoyable.
